What a strange place! Very cool. I was there after the visitor center closed so I just drove the road that looped the area. It was a little difficult to tell where I was allowed to be as a day visitor rather than a camper. The hiking trails weren’t clearly marked and were difficult to find without talking to someone at the visitor center. Even so, I was able to find a pull off spot that seemed ok to park at and wandered around the rocks in a way that I think didn’t bother any campers. It’s a very beautiful and strange boulder field in the middle of grasslands with mountain ranges in the distance. It’s worth seeing. Pay the $5.

Awesome park and campground!
I only stayed one night (wish I stayed longer actually!) and chose the campsite (“1 booties” on their website/”1 bootes” on the campsite sign) directly across from the visitor centre as I wanted to be close to the washroom & shower. The spot was super spacious and equipped with a firepit, picnic table, grill and secured garbage can. It felt very private with the rocks surrounding it and I got lucky with not having any neighbours beside me. I did the Hydra Trail hike around the site and it was so pretty, especially with all the snow that day! I would definitely stay here again for longer.

What a great experience for our whole family and for only $5! The restrooms at the visitors center have running water ,but the ones throughout the park don’t. They are more outhouse style. We took about 1 hour to explore. Recommend taking hiking boots to climb the rocks.

We saw they have electric and water camp sites . Some are 1st come 1st served.

Could have spent 4 hours here. Came at sunset and it was beautiful. Kids loved it. Downside is that if the wind gets above 25 mph the dust from the mine blows into the park. When we tried coming back it was just too dusty and hurt our eyes so we didn’t get to play.

Oh my goodness, I loved this place. I could live here; the rocks were amazing! There are quite a few hiking trails to explore. It’s so quiet here. Around 4am each morning I could hear a hooty owl; it was really cool! If I lived in New Mexico, I would have a state park pass and come here annually; it was that great! But, this is a great place to come and just spend the day. The staff that working at the visitors center were friendly and helpful. Never saw a rattlesnake, but it was a great place to bird watch. Make sure you have plenty of gas and food when you come as the closest place is 30 miles away.
